The quiet years don’t look like much

From the outside, almost nothing is happening.

You’re rebuilding. Friends still ask what you do. The old path made sense on paper. This one takes longer to explain.

Most advice turns the hard years into a neat parable. This book keeps the messier version: the borrowed airfare, the long plateau, the day the teams ran fine without you.

If this sounds like you

If you are rebuilding and nobody is watching, this is for you.

You’re between chapters

A venture ended, or the next step isn’t clear yet.

You lead, quietly

You carry people, and wonder when that becomes the ceiling.

You want the real version

The resets and the plateaus, not a tidy success story.

What’s inside

Twelve chapters. The quiet build, in order.

  1. Four Yuan

Shenzhen, 2017: failed business, street snacks, a borrowed flight home.

  2. The Path I Was Supposed to Take

From teaching scholar to Head of Department, then walking away.

  3. The Long Way Around

Ventures that worked but did not last.

  4. The Next Thing

Back in Singapore with almost nothing, carried by friends.

  5. The Indispensable Leader

Building a team abroad from the front.

  6. When the Ceiling Is in the Mirror

A long plateau, and the quieter danger of comfort.

  7. Beyond Yourself

The day I stopped feeling undeserving.

  8. On the Other Side of the Desk

Tokyo: the oldest student in class at a Japanese school.

  9. When They Stop Needing You

Leadership shifts from can I to should I.

  10. How Much of Me Does My Work Require?

Leverage, AI, and judgment that stays human.

  11. The Same City, A Different Man

Returning to Shenzhen on his own ticket.

  12. The Question of Enough

Contentment and ambition in the same hand.

I remember four yuan more clearly than most of what happened in the months before it.

Chapter 1, “Four Yuan”

From Chapter 1“Four Yuan”

A page from the opening chapter.

I remember four yuan more clearly than most of what happened in the months before it.

It was 2017 and I was in Shenzhen. My e-commerce business had done well enough for a while, but by then it had collapsed to almost nothing. I was hungry and nearly out of money. Walking down a street, I passed a stall selling a simple dough-based Chinese snack. I still don’t know its proper name. They were two yuan each, so I bought two.

Four yuan.

For some reason that bit of arithmetic stuck, while most of the period around it blurred. There was nothing profound about it. I wasn’t standing there thinking about failure or resilience or what I might learn from all this. I was hungry, the food was cheap, and I bought two.

About BK

Tan Boon Kwee (BK) taught English in Singapore and became Head of Department before leaving the path that looked right on paper. After ventures that worked for a while and one that didn’t, he rebuilt across markets in Asia.

He writes from Shenzhen now, after a year studying Japanese in Tokyo. The Quiet Build is how he got here: rebuilding without guarantees, leadership that makes itself less necessary, and what “enough” means.
